Privacy Policy
This policy explains how Study Site Mapper handles location, map projects, imported files, and information sent to map-data services when you use the mobile app. It also covers this website.

Information the app accesses
- Location: if you tap “Use current location” or another location-dependent action and grant permission, the app accesses your foreground location to position the study area. The app does not request background location access in this version.
- Study-area inputs: places you search for, coordinates you enter, shapes you select, and KML files you import are used to draw and analyze your map.
- Local project data: the app saves project names, map settings, selected coordinates or boundaries, and small project previews on your device so you can reopen your work.
- Exports: when you export a map, the app saves the requested image to your device photo library or lets you choose where to save a PDF.
How the information is used
The app uses this information to locate a study site, render basemaps and thematic layers, calculate available mapped-area statistics, preserve local projects, and make the exports you request. This version has no Study Site Mapper account system and does not include in-app advertising or a developer-operated analytics service.
External map and data services
To deliver map functionality, the app contacts third-party services. Depending on the action and layer, requests may include a place-search term, selected coordinates, a study-area geometry, or the map viewport. Those providers also receive ordinary network metadata such as an IP address. Services used by the current app include OpenStreetMap-based map and search providers, Esri imagery and land-cover services, geoBoundaries, terrain tiles from AWS / Mapzen sources, Global Mangrove Watch, WorldPop, HydroRIVERS or its river-network fallback, and sources used for country or province lookup. Their own privacy practices govern the requests they receive.
The app does not upload your complete locally saved project library to a Study Site Mapper account service. A KML boundary or selected coordinates may still be sent as part of a request when a chosen data layer or boundary service needs that geometry.
Storage, retention, and deletion
Map projects and imported KML content remain in the app's local device storage until you delete a project or clear the app's data. Uninstalling the app generally removes its local app storage, subject to your device's backup settings. Exported PNG and PDF files are separate copies in your photo library or chosen file location; delete those through your device. The app cannot directly remove records retained by third-party map providers.
Permissions and choices
You can decline foreground location permission and enter a place or coordinates instead. You choose whether to import a KML file, save a project, or export a map. You can remove individual projects within the app. Device settings let you revoke permissions later.
Website data
This website is a static product site. Its code does not set marketing cookies, ask you to create an account, or embed an analytics script. The hosting provider may process routine request information such as IP address, browser details, and access logs to deliver and secure the pages. If you email us, we use your message and email address to respond to your inquiry.
Security and changes
Device-stored projects are protected by your device's security controls. Connections to the map and data services named above use their HTTPS endpoints where available. No internet service or device storage can be guaranteed perfectly secure. We may update this policy when app functions or providers change; the effective date above will be updated.
